Johannesburg is known as the ‘City of Gold’ but the city goes by several other names as well, including Jozi and Joburg. It offers beautiful scenery, pleasant neighbourhoods and a wealth of history. 

Johannesburg is South Africa's largest city, both from a financial as well as industrial capital base, and was built on a long history of gold mining.  Renowned for its strong contribution to the South African economy, there are some interesting facts that make Joburg unique amongst cities in South Africa.

The Cradle of Humankind is located in Johannesburg. This contains the largest concentration of human ancestral remains in the world and the site was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999.

The city boasts the world's deepest mine – and is also home to both South Africa's biggest hospital and airport. Johannesburg has been rebuilt four times.

The Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) is Africa's largest stock exchange, offering listings, trading and more. Founded in 1887, it’s rated in the top 20 largest exchanges globally by market cap.

With its dominant market position, Johannesburg attracts local and foreign investment, supported by multiple initiatives including government policy, industry activity, foreign investments and local companies wanting to expand overseas.
